Abstract

This study aims to analyze innovation in the productive utilization of zakat for mustahik empowerment through Everett M. Rogers’ diffusion of innovations theory and M. Umer Chapra’s perspective on Islamic economics. This research uses library research with a descriptive qualitative approach by examining books, scholarly articles, journals, and relevant academic documents. The findings show that productive zakat is a socio-economic innovation because it shifts zakat distribution from consumptive assistance to productive empowerment that emphasizes business capital, mentoring, skill development, and the economic independence of mustahik. In Rogers’ theory, the adoption process of productive zakat can be understood through the categories of innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. In addition, successful adoption is influenced by relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. Chapra’s perspective affirms that productive zakat is in line with the objectives of Islamic economics because it supports social justice, equitable welfare, falah, and hayat tayyibah. Therefore, productive zakat should be managed innovatively, systematically, and sustainably to improve the material and spiritual welfare of mustahik.
